Pine Lodge Gardens & Nursery
CORNWALL TOURISM AWARDS 2008 - Small Visitor Attraction of the Year - Bronze Award
Explore 30 acres of herbaceous borders, shrubberies and water gardens boasting one of the largest collections of plants in the county. New 3 acre winter garden.
Experience a true horticultural hotspot brimming with rare and radiant plant species. Stroll through an enchanting collection of colour and scent, from the Japanese garden and the arboretum, to the stunning National Collection of grevilleas.
Pine Lodge was acquired by its present owners in 1974, shortly after which the formal terrace and sunken garden in front of the house were constructed. By the mid-1980s winding paths meandered through island beds sprouting an ever-growing range of unusual trees, shrubs and plants grown from seeds collected on global expeditions.
Crane your neck as you discover the exotic canopies of the arboretum, which has been extended on one side to create a magnificent pinteum. The trees here have been meticulously graded in size to form a semi-circle amphitheatre. Marvel at the dragonflies hovering above the pond planted with water lilies, follow the serpentine pathway between two waterfalls cascading into a pond swimming with Koi carp, and in May cross the enchanting bridge entwined with wisteria.
In the 'slave garden' you will find a circle of herbaceous beds housing a display of graded colours, and in spring a radiant collection of magnolias adorns the surrounding lawn. In total there are over 6,000 species of rare and unique plants in the grounds of this horticultural paradise, all of which have been labelled by an expert plantswoman - Mrs Shirley Clemo.
The nursery here stocks plants from seeds collected from all over the world on specialist plant-hunting expeditions. Like the treasures in the rest of this magical plant kingdom, many of the offerings here are unobtainable anywhere else in the UK.
