Trelowarren Estate

Trelowarren Estate

Escape to the wild beauty of these woodland gardens that blend into the rugged terrain of The Lizard Peninsula.

Discover this grand Domesday manor and historical garden that records prove to date back to 1428, when the Vyvyan family inherited the estate. The house was re-modelled in Georgian fashion, when its chapel was decorated with Strawberry Hill Gothic plasterwork. Walk across the formal lawns around the house, and follow granite steps up to the raised walk and pleasure gardens that were replanted and restored in the mid-18th Century.

In the three walled gardens to the west, there is evidence of the glazed Gothic folly windows in the walls and a turret folly stands in one corner. In this section climb up to Three Seas Point - the highest peak on the Lizard at just over 50ft - which was named when it could be seen on both sides of the Lizard as well as from the Atlantic. Now the surrounding growth of towering trees hides it from view on two sides, and the name has slid into the history books with much of the rest of the garden.

The estate is separated from the rest of Lizard by just a ha-ha (sunk fence) on the southern boundary, making it an idyllic garden for walkers. The Lizard is walking country par-excellence and once you've explored the extensive grounds and woodlands of the enclosed 32 acres, head out onto the surrounding heathland and meander towards the east coast of this rugged piece of land that juts out into the Atlantic.

It's a dog friendly spot, which is just as well, because you wouldn't want your four-legged companions to miss out on a leg-stretch across such beautiful countryside.
