Daffy Down Dilly Day

Daffy Down Dilly Day

This Sunday sees the 20th Daffy Down Dilly Day held at Trebah Gardens, Mawnan Smith. Celebrating the start of the spring season, the day represents an opportunity for visitors, Trebah members and staff to enjoy the beauty of spring and celebrate the beloved daffodil.

The name - 'Daffy Down Dilly' comes from a 16th century poem by Edmund Spenser. It goes -

"Bring hither the pink and purple columbine, with gilly flowers
Bring coronation, and sops of wine,
Worn of paramours.
Strew me the ground with daffadowndillies,
And cowslips, and kingcups, and loved lillies".

On Sunday there will be entertainment in the garden from the Carrick Breeze Youth Band and Mawnan Country Dancing. There will also be a childrens 'drop-in' collage art workshop with local artist Janet Judge from 11.30am to 1.30pm based in the Vinery, normal garden entry applies.

Marie Curie Cancer Care will also be there on the day with their very special 'daffodil table', including daffodil tea towels, notelets and their striking daffodil button holes will all be for sale. Every daffodil or donation helps them to nurse someone with terminal cancer.
