Roseland House Garden

Roseland House Garden

Roseland House is a 1 acre garden with a large range of unusual plants with conservatory and plant nursery surrounding old Mine Captain's House.

Small is beautiful, and in the case of Roseland House, small is crammed with a surprising array of colour and horticultural interest for a garden placed right in the middle of mining country. This one-acre paradise parades a vast range of unusual plants around an old mine-captain's house. It's a great place to escape the crowds and you will often find the creators of the garden on hand to discuss anything related to plants and gardening. Its abundance of flourishing colour is even more of a shock when you learn that when the current owners arrived in 1983, the garden was featureless, empty of plants, and without shelter.

Now there are always at least three types of clematis in bloom in this horticultural hotspot, and of over 100 varieties that it boasts, 53 are part of the National Collection of Clematis Viticella. But this is far from its only horticulturalists' calling. Leaning Eucalyptus Aggregata has been grown from seed, and the beds behind the pond are brimming with herbaceous plants and a collection of 300 climbers, roses and honeysuckles.

Follow the long pergola down the slope and over the gate, spotting speciality types of clematis and roses, and in the Victorian greenhouse discover scented-leaf pelargoniums and passionflowers. The upper garden is still an orchard with some trees dating back to the 1800s and here you can marvel at the Chacewater Long-stalk apple tree, that produces fruits small enough to be fed through the neck of a bottle, in which they are then pickled.

This is a dog friendly plot, and Chacewater is home to a whole host of walking and bridleways to explore and stretch your legs. All the plants in the well-stocked nursery are taken from the garden and grown from cuttings, seed or splits and clematis-lovers can choose from a selection of over 100 varieties.

Roseland House is a smaller garden and the owners love to meet and talk to all the visitors who wish to discuss plants and gardening. The garden comes into its own in early Summer, remaining full of flower and scent until Autumn.
